Ball and China Clay
Ball and China Clay
Most types of 'whiteware' pottery contain both ball clay and china clay. Ball clay helps to shape the pottery piece, adding 'green' strength to the body before firing, whilst china clay provides extra whiteness to the object. Russell Finex have experience with both of these materials and provide high quality separation equipment to help improve your product quality.
Ball clays
Ball clay consists of ultra fine clay particles. The fineness of the particles helps make them sticky (or 'plastic') and easily shaped when damp. Russell Finex grading sieves can be used at the slurry stage of ball clay production, ensuring the clay particle size is consistent to provide repeatable product quality.

China clay
True to its namesake, the use of this clay dates back to the 7th century AD, when it was used in China to make porcelain. Also referred to as kaolin clay, China clay is made from a mineral known as kaolinite. It has much coarser particles compared to ball clay, resulting in very poor plasticity. Subsequently, it is often used in conjunction with additives - usually ball clay and bentonite. China clay is mostly used for its highly valued whiteness, reflected by its frequent use in producing bonechina. However, impure varieties are also used as fillers for pigments in bricks and in the manufacture of paper. Russell grading sieves are used to ensure accurate particle size, providing repeatable product quality.
